Major step in personalized treatment — Thanks to a 2007 research grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, scientists identified a set of 50 genes that oncologists can potentially use to tailor individualized treatments for all breast cancer patients.
Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments, and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. That concern for others continued even as Susan neared the end of her fight. Moved by Susan’s compassion for others and committed to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.
More than twenty-five years later, Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is the world’s largest breast cancer organization, having invested more than $1 Billion since inception in 1982 towards breast cancer research, screening and treatment programs. As the largest global grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, we are working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to local events like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®, and generous contributions from our partners, sponsors and fellow supporters, we have become the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer worldwide.
On a local level, the Austin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has been working to better the lives of those facing breast cancer in the Greater Austin community since 1999. Through events such as the Komen Austin Race for the Cure® and other philanthropic endeavors, the Austin Affiliate has invested nearly $7 Million in community breast health programs in Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis, and Williamson Counties. Up to 75 percent of the Austin Affiliate’s net income goes toward funding grants to local hospitals and community organizations that provide breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs for medically underserved women. The remaining net income (a minimum of 25 percent) supports the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Grants Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific programs around the world.
