AUSTIN AFFILIATE OF SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE ANNOUNCES RACE ROUTE FOR 2011 KOMEN AUSTIN RACE FOR THE CURE

2011 Komen Austin Race for the Cure back Downtown Austin

August 12, 2011

Today, the Austin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® announced that the 2011 Komen Austin Race for the Cure® will be held in downtown Austin on November 13, 2011. This year’s race route  will start on Congress Avenue at 18th Street, circle around the Capitol, and finish at the intersection of 18th and Brazos Streets.

The Komen Austin Race for the Cure is one of the largest fundraising opportunities for the local affiliate. The funds generated through this event help the organization provide grants to local hospitals and community organizations that deliver breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs for medically underserved men and women in Travis, Williamson, Caldwell, Hays and Bastrop counties. Up to 75 percent of the Komen Austin Affiliate’s net income stays local. Last year alone, the Komen Austin Affiliate made its largest single investment in Austin-area communities—providing more than $1.1 million in grants.

“We are excited to hold the race downtown again this year and appreciate the community and city’s ongoing support,” said Christy Casey-Moore, executive director of the Komen Austin Affiliate.  “We hope this accessible race route will encourage more participants to come out and run or walk in memory of loved one, to celebrate survivors or to generate awareness about breast cancer.”

For the last 2 years, the race was held at The Domain, which drew fewer participants. Hosting the race downtown, Komen Austin hopes to increase the number of participants in this year’s race and raise additional funds to serve its Austin-area communities.

The 2011 Komen Austin Race for the Cure will be held on Sunday, November 13, starting near the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. Participants of all ages can either walk or run the 5k or family 1 mile. Timed race participants will start at 7:30 a.m. and untimed participants who will run or walk will start at 8:00 a.m. You can find more information about signing up to participate, volunteer or fundraise for the event at www.komenaustin.org.
