The Austin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® recently announced its largest single community investment of $1.139 million in grants at the annual Hope for the Cure luncheon at Green Pastures Restaurant in Austin.
Eleven non-profit health care organizations were selected to implement breast cancer prevention, treatment and education programs for the uninsured and underinsured men and women in Travis, Williamson, Caldwell, Hays and Bastrop counties. In addition, more than $450 thousand will be directed to the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Award and Research Grant Program.
"This contribution is made possible because of our volunteers, advocates, community partners and sponsors," said Christy Casey-Moore, executive director of the Komen Austin Affiliate. "The dollars they have helped us raise will allow thousands of women and men in our community to receive the necessary breast health services they would not have received due to the lack of insurance or funding."
Grants are distributed by the organization’s ability to implement projects that specifically address evidence-based strategies and programs to reduce breast cancer morbidity and mortality for those disproportionately affected by the disease.
The 2011-2012 Susan G. Komen Austin grantees include:
CommuniCare Health Centers
Community Action Inc. of Hays, Caldwell, and Blanco Counties
El Buen Samaritano Episcopal Mission
Helping the Aging, Needy and Disabled (HAND)
National Center for Farmworker Health (NCFH)
Planned Parenthood of the Texas Capital Region
Samaritan Health Ministries
Seton Family of Hospitals
The Breast Cancer Resource Centers of Texas (BCRC)
