The Pink Pitch committee was charged with the difficult task of selecting one person to throw out the first pitch at the Pink in the Park game on Wednesday, July 21.
After reading several submissions about inspiring men, women and children who in one way or another were faced with breast cancer, Trey Gillingwater was selected to throw out the first pitch. His mother, Mindy, celebrated her five year anniversary in April. Trey was only six when his mother was diagnosed.
In fourth grade, Trey penned a personal essay titled "My Mom is the Strongest Mom to Me" which was inspired by his mother's strength during her fight against breast cancer. Below is a small insert:
My mom is the strongest mom to me because she came to all of my baseball games though she was sick. One night in the summer it was the championship game and I was getting ready to go to the field and my mom told me she was too sick to go so then I muttered, “Mom please come please.’’ My dad yelled, “Come on Trey.” “Ok” I replied. So I got in the car and went to the field and the game started. Then I saw a white suburban and I saw my mom come out of it with a smile on her face. She looked at me with a big smile. I was up to bat and my mom was screaming as loud as she could and I thought to myself this is for you mom and I hit a triple that won the game for my team and I ran to my mom and hugged her like I never did before in my entire life and I have a lot more moments with my mom having breast cancer. This makes me realize that my mom is the strongest mom to me.
We hope you will join us as we cheer on Trey, Mindy and every survivor who will be on the field during the opening ceremonies at Pink in the Park. We encourage you to wear pink to show your support for the strong women and men who are fighting this disease and remember those we have lost. Together, we WILL find a cure!
It's not too late to take the field! If you are a survivor and want to take the field during the opening ceremonies, please email events@komenaustin.org. We will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the top of Section 113.
