Major step in personalized treatment — Thanks to a 2007 research grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, scientists identified a set of 50 genes that oncologists can potentially use to tailor individualized treatments for all breast cancer patients.

The Komen Austin Race for the Cure® raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship, and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.
This year our Honorary Race Chair Michelle Bynum is in an unprecedented fight to conquer her disease. She has close to $10,000 to help our mothers, daughters, sisters, friends and neighbors fight breast cancer through prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and ultimately to find a cure. Below is an excerpt from her story:
My name is Michelle Bynum and I am the 2009 Honorary Race Chair. At the age of 31, I found a lump in my breast that my OB/GYN said was nothing. I became pregnant and continued to feel the lump through one year of breastfeeding. My OB/GYN said the lump was milk, but eventually agreed to send me in for a mammogram saying, “You are too young, the techs will laugh.” Laughing stopped when I was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer at the age of 33. At 37, I have reached the most advanced stage of breast cancer and I am again battling this disease with chemotherapy, and praying for time to raise my 5-year-old son.
