Team Captain Tools

Thank you for deciding to start a team. This page will assist you through the steps of being a team captain, from the formation of your team, to recruitment and fundraising. For complete Race details, view the Race Information page.

Team Captain Checklist

Use this checklist as a reminder of your next steps and to help you keep track of your progress.

  1. Check if your company offers a discount on registration fees before you begin the registration process.
  2. Register as a Team Captain starting June 30th at 10am. This includes choosing a team name, setting a fundraising goal, and setting a recruitment goal. Jump start your fundraising goal by making a donation when you register, and get a Self Donor badge on your Personal Page.
  3. Utilize your Participant Center. Personalize your Team page, as well as your Personal Page. These are available in your Participant Center after you complete registration.
  4. Recruit team members. Display the Race posters around the office, campus, cafeterias, break rooms, gyms, and other high traffic areas. Put your name, phone number, and/or email address on the posters so people can contact you to get involved.
  5. Fundraise. Encourage your team members to set their own fundraising goals. You can send out fundraising tips, and create incentives such as highlighting the teams top fundraisng member. See the information about Team Fundraising below.
  6. Track your progress. Post a progress chart with your fundraising and recruitment goals in a visible area and update totals regularly. This chart is available for download via your Participant Center after you register.
  7. Stay in touch. Remind team members to also utilize their Participant Center to update their Personal Page, send emails, and keep track of the donations they raise. Use the documents above to assist your team members with registering and fundraising.

Team Recruiting & Fundraising Supplies

Once available, Team Captains are invited to pick up 2011 Austin Race for the Cure® posters and supplies at their local Academy Sports & Outdoor stores.  As a 2011 Race Sponsor, Academy has again generously offered to carry these supplies at all six of their Austin area locations (note that packet pickup is ONLY at the Brodie Academy location during the specified packet pickup date/time). Go to the Customer Service Desk and ask for the location of the Race for the cure supply box. You are welcome to take supplies out of the box for your team building and fundraising efforts. Please leave the box and any remaining supplies for other team captains.

Supplies available: 2011 Race for the Cure posters, Running Ribbon Pins, Donation/Registration forms, Impact of Fundraising flyers and volunteer flyers.

A huge thank you to Academy and Team Captains for your support!

 Team Fundraising

Last year, the 775 teams raised over $695,355 for the fight to end breast cancer. That’s a huge impact! We believe this was directly attributed to the team captains’ leadership and the support of team members to help meet and exceed their fundraising goals. This year, our goal is for Komen Race teams to make an even greater impact. If everyone raises $125 more than what they raised last year we will exceed our $1.5 fundraising goal. To get there, we are counting on your leadership.

Visit the How to Fundraise  page if you need help getting started. You can download documents for fundraising ideas, and suggesstions on how to ask for donations.

And remember, 75 percent net funds raised LOCALLY stays LOCALLY. The Komen Austin Affiliate provides funding to LOCAL non-profit healthcare organizations for breast health services for the underserved men and women in Travis, Bastrop, Hays, Williamson and Caldwell Counties. The remaining 25 percent funds the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Grants Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research.
